    What’s in a switch?

According to The Block judge and interior designer Darren Palmer, switches are one of the simple things to change that can help give your home a luxurious feel - and that's before you even turn them on!

Schneider Electric EcoXpert, Ryan worked with Darren on a complete electrical overhaul; installing stylish switches, energy efficient lighting and an easy to use smart system.

"By upgrading the switches, sockets and data outlets to Clipsal Saturn Zen I have increased the value of the home – it feels more expensive now," Darren Palmer said.

"Replacing switches is a simple change, but one which makes a massive difference to the look and feel of a house."

    Update and Automate.

"The specifications for the automation system evolved during the time we were working on the house with Darren Palmer," Ryan said.

Darren "was keen to get the maximum functionality out of the system, while making sure it was simple enough for anyone to be able to use."

“An important part of our role is making sure the technology is accessible, so we were very careful about how we put the package together."

Darren was keen to reduce carbon footprint by removing old halogen downlights in the house. Ryan replaced the old halogens with Clipsal tricoloured LED downlights – improving energy efficiency and filling the home with bright, clean looking light.

Build your smart home one switch at a time.

For a retrofit solution, Ryan recommended the affordable, scalable and wireless NERO, by Environexus.

With Nero you can build your smart home one switch at a time. With this in mind, Darren chose to integrate his lighting, outlets, sensors, AV including the NERO automated door lock.

Darren now has access to the Nero system using Push controls; an easy to use app.

The Push system is integrated with Amazon’s Alexa – providing voice control and voice activation of the system.

Different ‘scenes’ have been programmed into the system to control lighting, radio or television in a particular room.

"The NERO technology allows you to set up your home so that it interacts with you the way you want it to," Darren said.

Get ready to master your castle.

"The cool thing with a 'welcome home' scenario is that you can set up a 'geo fence' around your house so the automation system knows you've arrived – because you have your phone in your pocket – and the system can then carry out that whole sequence for you, without you lifting a finger. It is amazing how useful it becomes."

"Two weeks before we started, this Bondi house was just a normal, completely standard home. This project goes to show that this type of solution can be installed just about anywhere."

"I think that as time goes on, this is the type of solution we will expect to see as the norm – especially as entry level automation solutions, like NERO, are now very affordable," Ryan said.

"Thanks to television programs like The Block, consumers are more aware of what home automation is and what it might offer for them."

    Colours and patterns

Motion and occupancy sensors add convenience and save you money by turning lights off after the pre-set period of time and re-activate when the system detects someone approaching that can save you up to 50% of energy costs.

    Downlights

The wealth of possible combinations make it fun to experiment and see what styles best suit your creative concept. And as interior design styles change with the times, you’ll be able to adapt the look of your home right along with them.

    Dimmers

Dimmers don’t just set the mood, but they can save money too. Most of the time we don’t need to set our lights to full brightness to light a room, and if you dim your lights you’re using less energy to run them whether it is a lamp or string of lamps.
