Does the Altistart ATS46, ATS48 or ATS22 soft starters have a catch on the fly option?

Issue:
Catch on the fly option in the ATS46, ATS48 or ATS22 Soft Starters.

Product Line:
Altistart ATS46, ATS48 or ATS22 soft starters

Environment:
All

Cause:
Needs to know if you can restart a spinning motor after a power loss?

Resolution:
No, the soft start doesn't`t have catch on the fly.
However, if the motor is already spinning, then there should not be a problem starting it under most circumstances. The initial starting torque is low and allows for motor slip. Often, it will appear that the motor is ``catching on the fly`` because the torque and speed of the motor will increase as the soft starter accelerates.
If the spinning load is reverse of motor direction has high inertia, the motor may overload before the soft starter is able to accelerate it. This would be much the same as if started by means of a full voltage starter.

Will the Compact NSX breaker be for sale in the USA or Canada?

Issue:
Where can I buy a Compact NSX breaker?

Product Line:
Circuit Breakers

Resolution:
There are no plans for a general release of the Compact NSX breaker line in North America, since the NSX is not UL Listed to UL489 (UL 489 is the standard commonly required in the US). In the US, the PowerPacT circuit breakers should be used (PowerPacT breakers are UL, CSA, and IEC rated).

For support on these breakers, Please see the following link to Global Operations where you can select other countries:

How can a BCM module programmed for 2w Modbus be used on a 4w modbus communication system?

Issue:
Applying BCM programmed for 2 wire modbus to a 4 wire modbus system

Product Line:
Powerpact P/R and Masterpact NT/NW breakers with modbus communications

Resolution:
  1. With a newer Micrologic P or H trip unit, you may reprogram the BCM module to 4w.  This requires Micrologic trip unit firmware version 2010AK or newer.
  2. If the trip unit does not have this option or if it is an A trip unit, you may use a 2w to 4w converter, like CNV-100. See the attached instruction bulletin for more details.
  3. Schneider sales offices can also order a BCM programmed for 4w Modbus. Order the module number, 33106, in Q2C with a note that you want it programmed for 4w Modbus.
BCM 33106 profile is available only on Q2C Tool. Contact regional field offices to support order submission for customers who are unable to access Q2C.

What would cause the InF fault on the ATS48 softstarter?

Issue:
InF fault causes on the ATS48 softstarter.

Product line:
Altistart 48, ATS48

Environment:
All models, all serial number

Cause:
InF displayed on the unit.

Resolution:
InF is an Internal fault. Try disconnecting the Control Voltage from CL1,CL2 terminals to see if the fault will reset.
This fault appears if the control board cannot determine the soft starts power rating from the information stored in the EEPROM memory chip on the power board.

Possible causes are:
- Loose ribbon cable connection on the Power board or the Control Board.  Try remove the control board, check the plugs and pins. Reseat the control board back in place.
A few cases were observed in the field where the ribbon connector got loose due to vibration and caused this InF fault. The ribbon cable has to be reseated to fix the problem.

- The 24VDC is saturated.  Remove all connections to +24 terminal and then measure the voltage.

- SCR is shorted. Check Resistance across each SCR.

- If another ATS48 unit is available, try swapping control boards to confirm if the issue stays with the board or the soft start.

- Power rating not recognized.  Replace the Power board and/or Control board.

Can multiple motors be connected to one solid state soft starter?

Issue:
Can multiple motors be connected to 1 soft starter?

Product Line:
ATS48 ATS22

Environment:
All

Cause:
Application requirement

Resolution:
Yes.
Size the soft starter for the total full load amps of all motors to be connected.
Provide separate overload protection for each motor.

For ATS48: Make sure the CLP parameter in the drC menu is set to OFF.
For ATS22: Make sure SSC parameter in the Adj menu is set to OFF.

Motor connections to the soft starter output should not be made or broken while the soft starter is running.  The resulting sudden change in current will cause problems and possible damage to the soft starter or other equipment.

What would cause the shunt trip breaker to trip on the Enclosed ATS46 and ATS48 soft starters on power up?

Issue:
Wondering what would cause the shunt trip breaker to trip on the Enclosed ATS46 and ATS48 soft starters on power up?

Product Line:
ATS48

Environment:
Shunt trip breaker

Cause:

Circuit breaker disconnect is tripping on power up.

Resolution:
The fault relay has a timed on-delay contact that will power the breaker shunt trip coil if the Altistart R1 relay is not opened by the end of delay.  The factory sets the delay to 2 sec.  If the delay is set too short or the fault relay does not actuate, the shunt coil will energize and trip the breaker.  Consult factory wiring schematics.

Consider increasing the delay time on the time delay relay.
If the relay circuits operate properly, consider that the thermal or magnetic elements of the breaker may be tripping it, rather than the shunt coil.

How can an ATS46 or ATS48 be used with an undersized motor or no motor?

Issue:
ATS46 or ATS48 using an undersized motor or not using motor.

Product Line:
ATS46, ATS48

Environment:
All

Cause:
NA

Resolution:
A minimum load current is required for SCR conduction. Starter will trip on PHF (Phase Fault) if the motor current draw is less than 10% of the nominal motor current (adjustable down to 5% on ATS48).

A very small motor or motor loads that can not pull adequate current may require a smaller soft starter.
For testing purposes only, the SST parameter can be turned on under Level 3 parameters(drC menu on ATS48). This SST mode will automatically reset to "NO" when power is cycled.
SST will NOT allow the soft starter to operate with no motor.

Is a line isolation contactor or shunt trip circuit breaker needed with Schneider Electric ATS48 Soft Starters?

Yes a line isolation contactor or shunt trip circuit breaker is needed with Schneider Electric ATS48 Soft Starters.
Since the solid-state switches may be incapable of completely blocking the motor power should a fault occur, auxiliary isolation on the line side of the controller is required. Use either a circuit breaker equipped with a shunt trip coil or an electromagnetic contactor. Connect the isolation device to the fault relay of the controller so that it opens the controller power circuit in the event of a controller fault. The isolation device must be capable of interrupting motor locked rotor current.
