      Uses of the PT/CT ratio on E5600

      Goals and Symptoms

      This article explains the importance of PT/CT ratio on E5600 meter.

      Causes and Fixes

      On the E5600 the PT/CT ratios do not have any effect on the rate of pulses. The PT/CT ratios only affect values shown on the meter display and through MODBUS. By default the PT/CT ratios are set to 1, use this ratio to see what the meter is measuring on its blades or secondary side.
      When the voltage and current that the meter is monitoring at the secondary side of the PT/CTs is low it will take time before the KWh, kVARh, kVAh etc., in the real time screen, will show some values. In the example in Figure 1 and 2 there are no values for KWh, KVARh and kVAh even after five minutes. Same is true for the values displayed on the screen. Only integer values are displayed in the real time module and the meter display. In order to see the values that are less than 1 KWh/KVARh/ kVAh increases the PT/CT ratios and keep in mind that the new energy values have scaling.

      The E5600 meter will not communicate via RS-485.

      If the E5600 meter is installed in switchgear, it is possible to install the communication cable wire harness upside down. The E5600 meter can only communicate if the wire harness is installed the correct direction even though it is possible to install the wire harness upside down if you push hard enough.
      The symptoms of this issue include the fact that all the settings in the software are correct. The Tx and Rx lights will not blink at all. The meter will communicate through the optical cable but not RS-485. When the switchgear is opened the communication cable can be very difficult to remove from the meter.

      To resolve the issue flip the communications cable 180 degrees such that the cable is then right side up. This will resolve the communications issue and the Tx and Rx lights will begin flashing.

      How to calculate the pulse weight (Ke) for the PowerLogic E5600 digital pulse output

      Note: The E5600 takes into account the CT/PT multipliers when determining when to pulse.
      To calculate the pulse weight value, first determine the highest kW value you can expect and the required pulse rate. In this example, the following assumptions are made:

      The CT multiplier is 80, the PT multiplier is 4
      The maximum load is 1600 kW.
      One KY transition per second should occur at full scale.

      Step 1: Convert the 1600 kW load into a primary energy value, then into kWh/second.

      Primary Energy Value = (1600 kWh)(1 Hr)/(80*4) = 5 kWh (this is how much energy the meter sees)
      5 kWh/1 hour = 5 kwh per 3600 seconds yields 0.00138 kWh/second

      Step 2: Calculate the kWh required per pulse.
      (0.00138 kWh/second)/(1 pulse/second) = 0.00138 kWh/pulse

      Step 3: Round to nearest thousandth, since the meter only accepts 0.001 kWh increments.

      What is the Modbus address (Unit ID) for the optical port on the PowerLogic E5600?

      The optical port shares the same modbus address (unit ID) as the rs485 communication connection. When the meter is powered up, the display screens start scrolling information. The second screen in the scroll sequence is UID. This is the Modbus Unit ID of the meter.
      Note: For new meters, the default Modbus ID can be determined by adding 100 to the last two digits of the serial number.

      Energy Pulsing cannot be setup on the E5600 via the Optical Probe

      Goals and Symptoms

      When connecting to the E5600 meter for the first time, the energy pulsing cannot be properly enabled through optical port.

      Causes and Fixes

      As shown in the Figure below, KY Relay #1 and KY Relay #2 are enabled and the KT values have been defined. If communicating through Modbus the same screen will be shown below, indicating that the meter is ready to pulse through its Digital Output. The meter will not pulse until meter pulsing is enabled through the Modbus interface.
      In the case of attempting to enable meter pulsing through the optical probe, and receiving no pulses from the digital output, follow the steps below to resolve the issue:

      Step 1: Communicate to the meter via Modbus in ION Setup,
      Step 2: Disable the KY Relay #1 and KY Relay #2 and press the send button
      Step 3: Enable the KY Relay #1 and KY Relay #2 and press the send button
      Please note: Make sure that a KE value has been selected.

      E5600 Meter Setup through IR Optical Port

      Cause
      Must configure computer to use the optical probe by downloading the appropriate drivers for the optical probe.

      Resolution
      Excerpt from ION Setup Device Configuration Guide, which is attached at the bottom of this article.

      Tools required
      Before starting to set up your E5600 meter, make sure you have a computer with the latest version of ION Setup installed. To communicate with your meter through RS-485, you need to use a Modbus gateway or and RS-232 to RS-485 converter.

      To communicate with your meter through the IR optical port, you also need the following:
      • ANSI C12.9 type II optical probe (refer to the E5600 Installation and Operation Guide for the meter's front optical port specifications)
      • Strong magnet (such as a rare-earth or similar permanent magnet)
      Before starting ION setup, connect the meter to your computer using an ANSI C12.9 type II optical probe. If the Microsoft Windows driver for the USB optical probe is not installed, us the installation disc that came with the optical probe to install the driver, or download the appropriate driver from the optical probe manufacturer's website.

      Open your computer's Device Manager to see which serial port number is assigned to the optical probe:
      1. Right-click My Computer and select Manage.
      2. Expand System Tools and select Device Manager.
      3. Expand Ports.
      4. Note the optical probe's serial port number.
      5. Close the Computer Management screen.
      Meter communication
      This describes how to put the meter into diagnostic mode so that it can be configured through the IR optical port using ION Setup.
      1. Put the meter into diagnostic mode.
      • To put the meter into diagnostic mode, hold a strong magnet over the meter, approximately
        at the 12 o'clock position, to activate the reed switch. When the reed switch is
        activated, the meter's displat will show all segments, then a blank screen, and then will start to display the diagnostic display sequence. 
      Do not remove the magnet from the meter's reed switch while communicating through the meter's IR port.
      NOTE: RS-485 (Modbus) data will not be updated while the meter is communicating via the front optical port.​​
      1. Start and log on to ION Setup using Single Device Configuration mode. See the "Starting, Logging On and Logging Off" section of the ION Setup Help for more information on the operation modes, and starting and logging onto ION Setup.
      2. In the Connection Type dialog, select the optical probe's serial port number (see "Computer configuration" on page 8).
      3. Click OK.
        ION Setup attempts to establish a connection (9600 baud, ANSI protocol) to the device. If communication attempts fail, close ION Setup, check to make sure there is a good physical connection between the computer and the meter and ensure that the magnet is activating the reed switch. Restart ION Setup and try connecting to the device again.
      4. Configure the meter. The setup screens are detailed in the section "Meter Setup through RS-485" on page 10 of ION Setup Configuration Guide.

      PowerLogic E5600: Display Indicator Definitions

      List of meanings for the E5600 Display Indicators:
      R / C - Remote Communication: Appears on the meter display when an AMR device is communicating with the meter.
      P / R - Programmer Reader: Appears on the meter display when optical communication is taking place.
      Z / B - Zigbee: Appears on the meter display when a zigbee device is communicating with the meter.
      OPN - Open: Appears on the meter display when the service disconnect switch is in the open state.
      ARM - Appears on the meter display when the service disconnect switch is armed to be closed by either a network command or pushing the reconnect button on the cover.
      CLS - Close: Appears on the meter display when the service disconnect switch is closed.
      Z / F - Zero Fill: Appears on the meter display when the meter is in catch up and fills the load profile intervals with zeroes.
      S / B - Stand By: Appears on the meter display when the meter is waiting for the date and time to be set either optically or by communication.

      How to program higher resolutions for Ke values on an E5600 meter.

      Goals and Symptoms

      Ke values are limited to 0.001 to 16 range and can only be increments of 0.001. If a value such as 0.00125 is needed for the Ke value, with the current configuration, this is not possible as the next value that could be used would be 0.002.

      Causes and Fixes

      Workaround:
      Here is the procedure to allow the user to program a higher resolution for the Ke value via the front panel optical port.

      1. Using Windows Explorer, go to the ION Setup folder, then go to the sub-folder TABLES/ANSIC12/SQD5600 and open the SETUP.CFG file in that folder using Notepad.

      2. Find the [Energy Pulsing] section which should look like the following:

      There is no resolution at this time, however this has been submitted for review to create a permanent fix in future firmware versions.

      How to configure energy pulsing on the E5600 with ION Setup.

      Goals and Symptoms

      Procedure below shows how to configure pulsing on the E5600 meter.

      Causes and Fixes

      How to configure pulses on E5600:
      The PT/CT ratios do not have any effect on the rate of pulses. The screen shown in Figure 1 is available when you setup your meter in ION Setup. It has fewer modules compared to some of the higher end meters. Basic setup is where you can configure the PT/CT ratios.

      The first step is to go in the demand module (refer to Figure 2) and set the Block Length to 15 minutes (this should be the default setting).

      After setting the demand interval, select Energy Pulsing and the screen in Figure 3 will appear. The pulses by default are disabled. After enabling the pulses and the selecting the source, the KE Values are then selected.

      Ke=energy (kW) per pulse, Minimum value of Ke is 0.001 and Maximum value is 16.

      The meter will pulse when Ke > Kwh Del (for the following screen where kWh Del is selected to be the source). In order to check when the meter will pulse the following equation can be used:

      Ke (in Kwh units) > Kwh/PT*CT

      How to check pulses on the E5600:

      Without connecting any device to the meter the following registers can be read through modbus to see if the meter is pulsing through its digital outputs. The registers show ON or OFF status only. If the meter is pulsing the value for the register will be switching between 1 and 0.

      The other simple test is to connect the digital outputs to the digital inputs of the meter to check the pulses. In which cases the following registers can be read through Modbus to see if the digital inputs are receiving pulsing signals. The registers show ON or OFF status only

      Digital outputs can handle at the most 120mA. The Digital Output Specifications in the installation guide gives more detailed specifications.

       



      Once it has been determined that the meter is pulsing properly, master reset the meter. This step is necessary since the meter does not pulse until the first demand interval is completed. For example, if the meter time is at 12:01 pm and the Block length is set to 15 minutes then the first pulse will happen at 12:15pm. This is true even if the meter has accumulated enough energy to pulse. By changing the demand interval to something less than 15 minutes does not help in the meter to pulse early.

      Please note: From the Digital output the meter performs KY pulsing, hence after 2 Ke you would see a transition as can be seen in figure 4 below. Make sure on the software side you multiply the pulse counter by a factor of two to get the right number of pulses to determine accurately the energy measured.
