What ports are utilized by PowerChute Network Shutdown and how are they secured?

What ports are utilized by PowerChute Network Shutdown and how are they secured?

      PowerChute Network Shutdown 4.x

      All supported OS

      PowerChute Network Shutdown utilizes
      TCP port 80, 443, 3052, 6547
      UDP port 3052

PCNS web interface utilizes port 3052 and 6547.
When logging in over port 3052 a user is redirected to port 6547 to utilize TLS. PCNS supports TLS 1.3 but will accept connections over TLS 1.2. TLS 1.1 and earlier are not supported except for AIX.
Users are required to provide user name and password. A strong password can be configured.
See Application Note 144 for more information.

For PCNS communications to the NMC
The default port when PCNS registers with the NMC is 80 for HTTP, or 443 for HTTPS. When port 80 is utilize MD5 authentication is used. Do not change the port number within PCNS unless you changed the port being used by your NMC. Optional HTTPS ports are 5000 – 32768

When registering with the NMC PCNS will provide authentication. A user name and an authentication phrase are passed from PCNS Agent to the NMC. The default authentication phrase is admin user phrase. The authentication phrase and user name configured in PCNS Agent and the NMC must match to allow communication.

When PCNS is restarted it will communicate with the NMC using HTTP or HTTPS unless a change is made to pcnsconfig.ini. For more information on pcnsconfig.ini see FAQ FA159757 Also, if Force negotiation is selected on the NMC HTTP or HTTPS will be utilized to check PCNS settings.

The NMC communicates with PCNS over UDP port 3052. A UDP packet is sent every 25 second to ensure communication between the NMC and PCNS Agent. Also, an Individual Client Notification packet (MACONFIG packet) is sent by the NMC every 100 seconds. See Application Note 20 for more information. The UDP packets use MD5 authentication ensuring that the password is never sent in plain text.
See Application Note 20 for more information.

Cable Picture Degradation When Using an APC Coaxial Surge Protector

After connecting an APC device with Coax Protection, customer observes picture degradation or loss of digital channels.

      Product Line:

SurgeArrest, Protectnet, Back-UPS, Back-UPS Pro, APC AV line of products

Standard dB available to a home is 14 dB. Most television tuners require 7 dB

to get a picture. Therefore, if one has a VCR and TV with coax cable between

them, then 7 dB is all that is left for both. If one also has a FM receiver

connected which requires 4 dB, the chances of 'ghosting' or lines being present

are higher. Several cable subscribers have opted to split their cable

connection so they can have a TV in the living room and the bedroom for

example. Cable deregulation allowed customers to do this, but the cable

company will not boost the signal to compensate unless they are informed by to

do so. The customer would be billed for the boosted signal. The end result is

a serious degradation of the signal. Inserting a cable protector like an APC

Per3C, Per7C, or Pro8TV would cause a slight, additional dB loss. The signal

has now degraded to the point where any magnetic interference could propagate

      into the cable signal."

      Cause / Resolution:

APC Coax protection has been tested from 30 MHz to 1 GHz.
It's insertion loss is at 1 GHz were attenuation is 5 dB.
Over most of this frequency range, the insertion loss is ~ 1 dB

      1. Check all cable ""F"" Connectors for proper crimping. Buy pre-cut and

terminated cables from an electronics store; such as Radio Shack.

      2. Use a 50 ohm terminator for any exposed non-connected female connectors

      (available at many electronics stores).

      3. Purchase a cable signal booster (boosts cable signal to around 20-24 dB).

      4. Inform their local cable provider that they are splitting and pay for an

extra connection. A cable company can boost a signal. It is a cleaner way to

go rather than using a booster.

"Failed to Apply Configuration Profile" error when adding Agents to PowerChute Business Edition Server

"Failed to Apply Configuration Profile" error when adding Agents to PowerChute Business Edition Server

      PowerChute Business Edition

      All support OS

There are several reasons PowerChute Business Edition will return this error.

      Reason 1:

If the user name and password given to the PowerChute Business Edition Agent do not match those given to the PowerChute Business Edition Server.

      1. Log into the Server through the Console application and go to the Tools menu and change user name and password. This will only work on PowerChute Business Edition version 6.1 or higher. This will also change the user name and password for all Agents already configured with this Server.

      2. Uninstall the Agent portion of the software and reinstall with a user name and password that matches the Server.

      Reason 2:

An unsupported UPS will give this error as well.

      1. Upgrade to a supported UPS model. This can be done through  APC's Trade UPS Program in North America

      Reason 3:

No Network communications between the Agent and Server can cause this issue as well. Firewalls or a lack of a proper network configuration can be the cause

      1. If the Server portion is installed on a different system than the Agent, try to ping the Agent's system from the Server's system. If the system cannot be pinged, there is a network issue that must be resolved before PowerChute can apply the configuration profile. To ping another system, simply go to a command prompt and type the following: ping agent_ip where agent_ip is the ip address of the system with the Agent installed.
      2. If the network has a firewall, this can be the source of the communications issue. Make sure ports 3052, 2260, 2160, and 2161 are not blocked. Some Anti-Virus software can block ports and can install a firewall. There have been some cases where Anti-Virus software has had to be stopped or uninstalled and then the Business Edition Agent reinstalled to solve this issue. In most cases, the Anti-Virus software could then be restarted or reinstalled. PCBE ports used and protocols: 2161 - TCP & UDP 2160 - TCP 2260 - TCP & UDP 3052 - TCP Security used: logging into agent through server SSL logging into server through console MD5
      3. If the system where the Agent is installed has more than 1 network card, the PowerChute Business Edition Server may not be able to locate the Agent. If this is the case, check TCP/IP properties for it's binding order. Make sure the IP of the card you are adding to the configuration is the first item in the TCP/IP binding order.
      4. Make sure TCP/IP is installed properly and the network card is bound
      5. If the system does not have a network card or is not on a network, it will be necessary to install Microsofts Loop-Back Adapter. This will allow you to type in place of the actual system IP. The loop back adapter must be installed on systems that are not on a network if the Agent is to be accessed through a browser as well.
      6. A DMZ (demilitarized zone) is similar to a firewall. In this type of situation, the Agent and Server may not be able to achieve 2 way communications. If there is an issue such as this, you can open the same ports as listed for a firewall but we recommend simply making sure the Agent and Server reside on the same side of the DMZ.

      Reason 4:

If you are using a USB Smart UPS unit and the USB cable is connected to the keyboard hub or an external hub.

Disconnect the USB cable from the keyboard hub or external hub and connect it directly to the root hub in the PC

      Reason 5:

The Agent service is not running.

As above, try to connect to the Agent through it's web user interface. If you cannot connect, the Agent may not be running. Make sure the APC PBE Agent service is started and set to automatic.
