What is the difference between a QO and QOB breaker?

      Product Line:

      QO and QOB

      Environment:
      Electrical Distribution Systems

      Resolution:
A QO breaker is plug on mounting, and can be used in QO load centers, old NQO and NQOD panelboards, and current NQ panelboards. A QOB breaker uses a bolt-on connection to the bus, and can be used in old NQOB and NQOD panelboards, and current NQ panelboards. Otherwise the breakers are the same.

A DC shunt trip on a Powerpact M, P, or R frame breaker fails to trip the breaker with rated voltage applied.

      Product Line:
      Circuit Breakers
      PowerPact M, P, and R

      Environment:
      Electrical Distribution Equipment

      Resolution:

What do the terms AC1 and AC3 mean?

      Issue:
What are the utilization categories AC-1 and AC-3?

      Product Line:
      Schneider Electric Products

      Environment:
      Inductive and Resistive Loads

      Resolution:
AC-1 - This category applies to all AC loads where the power factor is more than 0.95. These are primarily non-inductive or slightly inductive loads, such as resistive loads. Breaking the arc remains easy with minimal arcing and contact wear.

AC-3 - This category applies to squirrel cage motors with breaking during normal running of the motor.
On closing, the contactor makes the inrush current, which is about 5 to 7 times the rated full load current of the motor.
On opening, the contactor breaks the rated full load current of the motor.

What is the recommended Fuse or Circuit Breaker (OCPD) size for Altivar 61 drives?

Refer to the attached Quick Start Annex, document S1B86981.

Is the communicating shunt trip and close coil for the Masterpact continuous-duty or momentary?

      Issue:
Is the communicating shunt trip and close coil for the Masterpact continuous-duty or momentary?

      Product Line:
      Circuit breakers

      Environment:
Masterpact NW NT, Powerpact P R

      Resolution:
Constant voltage must be supplied to terminal C3
Voltage may be applied continuously to terminal C2, but  the plunger will only extend for 0.5 seconds and then retract.
The coil may be operated via Modbus commands, but operation will also only be momentary.  It is not possible to keep the coil energized with Modbus.

With the non-communicating device the plunger will stay extended as long as voltage is applied to the terminals.

Do you need to take into consideration the service factor of the motor when setting the trip range on the Solid State Motorlogic overload relay?

      Issue:
Do you need to take into consideration the service factor of the motor when setting the trip range on the Solid State Motorlogic overload relay?

      Product Line:
      Solid State Overload relay

      Environment:
      Micrologic Solid State Overload Relays

      Cause:
      Product features

      Resolution:
If the continuous - rated motor has a service factor of 1.0, then you would set the dial to 90% of the motor's full load current.
Otherwise, there is a built in service factor of 1.15 - 1.25. If the continuous - rated motor has a service factor of 1.15 - 1.25,
set the dial to the motor's full load current rating. All other service factor ratings will need to be calculated by others.

Can circuit breakers be reverse-fed or back-fed? A compiled list included.

      Product Line:
      Circuit Breakers

      Environment:
      Electrical Distribution Equipment

      Resolution:
Any circuit breaker that does NOT have Line and Load (or + and - on DC breakers) identifying markings may be reverse fed. This includes all Square D industrial thermal-magnetic and electronic trip circuit breakers.  See the compiled list below:

Breakers that can be back fed and exceptions (This is a work in process list, it is probably not inclusive and does not yet include legacy breakers):
      • HOM (Excludes those with suffix GFI, EPD, AFI, CAFI and DF.)
      • QO and QOB (Excludes those with suffix GFI, EPD, EPE, AFI, CAFI and DF.)
      • QOU
      • Multi 9 products (Excludes the products rated 125VDC, and 250-500Vdc. Also excludes ID Residual current switches, GFP, DPN VIGI and Vigi modules.)
      • E frame for NF panel (Excludes those with suffix EPD.)
      • Powerpact H, J and L frame (Excludes those with T or R suffix, which are breakers with replaceable trip units. Also excludes those with Fxx suffix, which are "frame only" sold without terminations or trip unit.)
      • Powerpact Q frame
      • Powerpact M, P and R frame
      • Masterpact NT and NW (Excludes Masterpact DC rated breakers)
      • NOTE: Any Legacy or Powerpact breakers with GFM and ELM module attached cannot be reverse fed.

How many faults can a breaker interrupt?

      Issue:
What number of short circuits or faults are Square D breakers rated to interrupt?

      Product line:
      Circuit breakers

      Environment:
      UL489 listed circuit breakers

      Resolution:
This is a summary of what breakers do for UL489.  Requirements vary, so please refer to the UL489 for complete details.

      At Rated Current (handle rating):
Frame Size Amperes Full Load Operations No Load Operations
      0-100 6,000 4,000
      101-225 4,000 4,000
      226-600 1,000 5,000
      601-800 500 3,000
      801-2500 500 2,000
      2501-4000 400 1,000

      Overload:
The circuit breaker is operated making and breaking 600% of its continuous current rating, but not less than 150 ampere.
For circuit breakers through 1600 ampere, the number of 600% operations is 50
For larger circuit breakers through 4000 ampere, the number of operations is 25.

      Short Circuit:
For circuit breakers rated 240 Vac and higher, two 10 kA short circuit tests per pole and one test with all poles connected in series is performed.  For example, a 3-pole circuit breaker receives seven short circuit tests.

High Available Fault Current Tests (twice at interrupting rating):
After qualifying a set of circuit breakers to the standard tests, a manufacturer can have additional circuit breaker samples tested on higher than standard available fault currents.
