Why is my smoke alarm chirping?

There may be two reasons for a chirping or beeping smoke alarm.

1. Low battery

  • If the alarm starts beeping once every 40s, the backup battery needs replacing.

  • If you wish to replace the battery later, press the test/hush button to snooze for 10hrs.


2. False alarm

  • If the smoke alarms go into alarm with no smoke present, firstly identify the unit which has triggered.
  • While alarming, look for the smoke alarm with the flashing RED LED.
  • If the alarms have stopped sounding before you could identify the alarm that triggered, look for the alarm which has the RED LED flashing once every 2 seconds. (it will do this for up to 72hrs)
  • Vacuum this unit to clean dust or cobwebs. If later it still false alarms, call an electrician to check the alarm.

The smoke alarm has just been installed. Now what?

  • Keep dust cover on until all construction is done and all cleaning is finished. This avoids false alarms from dust entering into the alarm.

  • If the area is prone to insects and spiders, spray insect spray on a cloth and wipe around the alarm to deter insects. Do this every 3 months.

  • Once power is applied, the alarm will beep once after 40 seconds for initial startup indicating alarm is ready. The Green LED will be lit indicating 240V is applied. The RED LED will also flash every 40s indicating the battery is working.

How should smoke alarms be maintained?

Once a Month

Test smoke alarm and backup batteries:

  • Press and hold the Test/Hush button for at least 3 seconds until the unit alarms.

  • Continue to hold for another 10 seconds to confirm all interconnected alarms activate.

  • To check the backup battery, repeat the test while mains power is turned off.

  • The alarm should sound indicating the battery is working. If it does not, replace the battery.

Every three months

Clean smoke alarms:

  • Vacuum smoke alarms to keep them free of dust particles, insects or cobwebs. This helps reduce false alarms and ensure any smoke can easily reach its internal sensing chamber.
  • Spray insect repellent on a cloth and wipe the ceiling around the smoke alarm to act as a bug deterrent.
  • Test the smoke alarm after cleaning.

Every year

Replace 9V backup batteries:

  • Press the button on the side of the unit (755PSMA4) or pull the alarm unit down (755PFM4) to reveal the 9V battery.

  • For efficiency and to avoid replacing batteries, upgrade to a rechargeable lithium backup alarm such as the 755RLPSMA4.

Every 10 years

Replace the smoke alarms:

  • Regardless of manufacturer, all smoke alarms have a limited life of 10 years from date of manufacture.
  • Contact a licensed electrician to replace your unit.

Am I insured without an smoke alarm?

Smoke alarms are a legal requirement right across Australia. Insurance providers have made smoke alarms a prerequisite for obtaining home insurance. 

How do I test a smoke alarm installed on a 755RFB mounting base?


  1. Test the LOCAL smoke alarm:

    Press and hold either the Remote Test button or the Local Test / Hush button and release within 4 seconds. Only the local smoke alarm will sound.

  2. Test the LINKED smoke alarms:

    Press and hold either the Remote Test button or the Local Test / Hush button for more than 5 seconds. The linked alarms will sound.

Note for wireless interconnection

After 5 seconds, a signal of 15 seconds duration is sent to all units. When the wireless linked smoke alarms detect the signal, they will sound until the signal is no longer transmitted.The wireless detection interval is 10 seconds.

Important: After the Test / Hush button has been pressed, wait 10 minutes before any additional testing is conducted to avoid any false alarm responses as product has reduced sensitivity during this period.

How do I wirelessly pair 2 x 755LPSMA4 units together?

  1. Choose a smoke alarm as master and apply the Master label.

  2. Use a flat blade screwdriver to carefully switch master and slave alarms on.

  3. On the master, press the Test/Hush 3 times in 2 seconds. The blue network LED should illuminate.

  4. Press Slave Test/Hush 3 times within 2 seconds while the master blue network LED is on. Network LED should flash for 3 seconds.

  5. Both master and slave network LED will flash green for a further 3 seconds indicating successful interconnection.
