Resolution:
The EVlink series of Level 2 charging station require a 40A, non-GFI type breaker for each charging outlet. #8 wire is required (L1, L2, and GND). For dual outlet charging stations, two 40A non-GFI breakers will be required (one for each charging outlet). A neutral connection is not required for EVlink stations.
A 40A circuit breaker is required as the continuous output current from the charging station can be as high as 30A.

Electric vehicle charging station is making a humming or buzzing noise. Is that normal? Can it be fixed?
Hide ShowElectric vehicle charging station is making a humming or buzzing noise. Is that normal? Can it be fixed?
Product Line:
EVlink Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVSE)
Resolution:
The source of the humming or buzzing noise is likely the electrical contactor. The most common cause is a small amount of debris or dust on the mechanism of the contactor causing the movable portion to not seat perfectly and vibrate. This is not uncommon for unsealed contactor products. Cleaning the contactor can be performed by a qualified person working on the equipment in a de-energized state with Isopropyl alcohol or compressed air.
The buzzing or humming sound may clear itself over time and does not prevent proper charging of the connected EV.

Why is there a voltage present at the terminals of the open contact of an IHP digital time clock.?
Hide ShowThis is used to avoid the inrush currents of certain loads, particularly lighting.
This solution involves a low leakage current traveling through the electronics which generates residual voltage at the contact terminals, even when open. This can cause problems when very low loads (small relays, LEDs, etc.) are operated, as the receiver may be "held on" by this spurious voltage.
Note:
For this type of application (low load), a conventional electromechanical programmable time switch should be used.

Cause:
Most PC's today do not have built in RS-232 ports. The PC must use a USB to RS-232 adaptor device or cable. It has been our experience that some of these USB to RS232 adaptors work better than others. The reasons for these differences is typically driver related.
Also, it has been our experience that although a USB to serial adaptor may be known to work on one piece of equipment, it may not work on the C-Bus PCI. For example, we have seen some adaptors successfully connect to a Powerlink G3 controller and then fail to connect to a C-Bus RS-232 PCI.

Running a 230V motor with an 480V Altivar drive and supply.
Product Line:
All 480 Volt Altivar drives.
Environment:
All models rated for 480V input and output, All serial numbers.
Cause:
Incompatible motor/drive selection made
Resolution:
It is not recommended to operate a 208/230V motor from a 480V drive. It is possible if certain conditions are met to do so temporarily however it is strongly advised that the correct voltage drive/motor be installed.
A 230V motor requires roughly twice as much current as a 460V motor to produce the same amount of horsepower and this can exceed the rating of the 480V drive. Also, you must set the rated motor voltage in the drive to match the actual rated voltage of the motor. Refer to the programming manual for your particular drive for instructions to change this parameter. Also, be aware that the output of the drive is not a true sine wave. It is a pulse width modulated signal generated by the IGBTs and each of these pulses will be at the voltage of the DC bus. On a 230V drive the DC bus voltage is typically around 325 VDC. On a 480V drive this voltage is typically around 680VDC. This increased voltage may cause damage to your motor. If a 480V drive must be used on a 230V motor temporarily, a 5% load reactor should be placed between the output of the drive and the motor to help reduce this voltage. In all cases it is advised to replace the motor or drive as needed to a selection that is compatible. Note that a 480V drive can not operate with 230V input so if 480V supply is all that is available then the drive must be rated for 480V. In this situation it would be best to replace the motor with one rated for 460V.
