Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Altistart ATS46, ATS48 or ATS22 soft starters have a catch on the fly option?
Hide ShowCatch on the fly option in the ATS46, ATS48 or ATS22 Soft Starters.
Product Line:
Altistart ATS46, ATS48 or ATS22 soft starters
Environment:
All
Cause:
Needs to know if you can restart a spinning motor after a power loss?
Resolution:
No, the soft start doesn't`t have catch on the fly.
However, if the motor is already spinning, then there should not be a problem starting it under most circumstances. The initial starting torque is low and allows for motor slip. Often, it will appear that the motor is ``catching on the fly`` because the torque and speed of the motor will increase as the soft starter accelerates.
If the spinning load is reverse of motor direction has high inertia, the motor may overload before the soft starter is able to accelerate it. This would be much the same as if started by means of a full voltage starter.
Is a mechanical interlock attachment kit similar to the QO2DTI or QO2DTIM available for Homeline circuit breakers?
Hide ShowIs there an manual transfer interlock available for Homeline load centers?
Product Line:

How is the sleep/wake (low speed timeout) programmed on the ATV212 drives?
Hide ShowIssue:
Sleep/wake operation (low speed timeout) programmed on the ATV212 drives.
Product Line:
Altivar ATV212
Environment:
All
Cause:
Allows the drive to shut off after running at a preset low speed for a preset period of time.
Resolution:
The sleep/wake threshold is defined as LL + F391.
The time period to trigger sleep mode is F256.
If the drive operates at or below the threshold (LL + F391) for a period of time (F256), the drive will decelerate to a stop and flash LStP. It will remain stopped until the speed reference again exceeds the threshold (LL + F391). The drive will then accelerate to the new reference.

Do power wires need to be installed in separate conduits for AC drives?
Hide ShowPower wires installation for AC drives
Product Line:
Altivar drives
Environment:
All
Cause:
Installation
Resolution:
Good wiring practice requires the separation of control wiring from power wiring. Power wiring to the motor must have the maximum possible separation from all other power wiring, whether from the same drive controller or other drive controllers. Do not run power and control wiring, or multiple power wiring, in the same conduit. This separation reduces the possibility of coupling electrical transients from power circuits into control circuits or from motor power wiring into other power circuits.
Use of special shielded cables does not reduce or eliminate the need for cable separation.
Please refer to the installation documents for more information.
Can multiple motors be connected to one solid state soft starter?
Hide ShowCan multiple motors be connected to 1 soft starter?
Product Line:
ATS48 ATS22
Environment:
All
Cause:
Application requirement
Resolution:
Yes.
Size the soft starter for the total full load amps of all motors to be connected.
Provide separate overload protection for each motor.
For ATS48: Make sure the CLP parameter in the drC menu is set to OFF.
For ATS22: Make sure SSC parameter in the Adj menu is set to OFF.
Motor connections to the soft starter output should not be made or broken while the soft starter is running. The resulting sudden change in current will cause problems and possible damage to the soft starter or other equipment.
How do I set up PID for sleep wakeup on an ATV21 or ATV212 drive?
Hide ShowIssue:
Sleep Wake Up function
Product Line:
ATV212, ATV21
Environment:
All model and serial numbers
Cause:
None
Resolution:
For PID setup see FAQ FA230136.
PID SLEEP WAKEUP can be activated by setting F256 [Time limit low spd]
Setting this function to 0 disables this function.
The range of this function is between 0 and 600 seconds. 0 deactivate this function.
If parameter F256 is activated and if the drive operates continuously at [Low limit frequency] (LL) for a time period equal to the setting of F256, the drive will ramp the motor to a stop. While the motor is stopped, “LStP” will flash on the drive
embedded display terminal.
When the speed reference to the drive exceeds the low speed level LL+F391, the drive will accelerate the motor to the new speed
reference.
What would cause the shunt trip breaker to trip on the Enclosed ATS46 and ATS48 soft starters on power up?
Hide ShowIssue:
Wondering what would cause the shunt trip breaker to trip on the Enclosed ATS46 and ATS48 soft starters on power up?
Product Line:
ATS48
Environment:
Shunt trip breaker
Cause:
Circuit breaker disconnect is tripping on power up.
Resolution:
The fault relay has a timed on-delay contact that will power the breaker shunt trip coil if the Altistart R1 relay is not opened by the end of delay. The factory sets the delay to 2 sec. If the delay is set too short or the fault relay does not actuate, the shunt coil will energize and trip the breaker. Consult factory wiring schematics.
Consider increasing the delay time on the time delay relay.
If the relay circuits operate properly, consider that the thermal or magnetic elements of the breaker may be tripping it, rather than the shunt coil.

How can an ATS46 or ATS48 be used with an undersized motor or no motor?
Hide ShowATS46 or ATS48 using an undersized motor or not using motor.
Product Line:
ATS46, ATS48
Environment:
All
Cause:
NA
Resolution:
A minimum load current is required for SCR conduction. Starter will trip on PHF (Phase Fault) if the motor current draw is less than 10% of the nominal motor current (adjustable down to 5% on ATS48).
A very small motor or motor loads that can not pull adequate current may require a smaller soft starter.
For testing purposes only, the SST parameter can be turned on under Level 3 parameters(drC menu on ATS48). This SST mode will automatically reset to "NO" when power is cycled.
SST will NOT allow the soft starter to operate with no motor.
