What is a Clipsal Cortex™ Meter?
Hide ShowThe Clipsal Cortex™ Meter is easy to install and commission. It measures energy usage of the main circuits and appliances in real-time which is a unique selling point for homeowners.
What comes in the standard package:
The standard package comes with two boxes containing the following:
1) Smart monitoring box:
- 1 x Quick Install Guide
- 1 x Meter
- 1 x Current Terminal Block (plugged into the meter)
- 1 x Voltage Terminal Block (with wires)
- 1 x Screw-in Cellular Antenna
- 1 x Meter Serial Sticker Set
2) Current transformer box:
- 6 x 60A Current Transformers
- 1 x CT Label Kit

Clipsal Cortex Meter Hardware FAQs:
Do I require sub-standard CT sizes?
The meter comes standard with 6x60A CTs with an internal diameter of 10mm. These CTs are sufficient for most residential situations. In some cases when the customer has a large consumer mains or thick insulation around the consumer mains, a larger CT may be required. Please contact the support team to organise this.
Do I require an external antenna?
The meter uses 4G Cellular data to communicate. Each antenna comes standard with a small SMA screw in antenna.
In locations of low mobile reception, it is possible to use a high gain external SMA antenna. Contact the support team for more details.
How many Clipsal Cortex™ Meters do my customers need?
Hide ShowThe two main things to consider when choosing the number of meters required is how many circuits are required to be measured and if all the circuits are located on the same switchboard.
Each meter comes with six CTs to measure up to six circuits. The circuits which are required to be measured to gain full functionality of the Clipsal Cortex™ app are:
- All grid circuits (1 for single-phase, 3 for 3-phase)
- All solar outputs (1 for each single-phase inverter, 3 for each 3-phase inverter)
- Controlled load (if customer has)
- Battery (if customer has)
- Backup or hybrid circuit (if customer has)
Once all the above circuits are measured it should be discussed with the customer what loads they also wish to measure. We recommend measuring larger loads, with a preference for loads the customer can change the time of day they are operating so they can gain more benefit out of the solar. Some examples arehot water, pool pumps, electric vehicle chargers and aircon.
Next, consider if all the circuits are on the same switchboard. If not, two meters may be required.
Note: It is possible to extend the CT cable up to 10 meters, without losing much accuracy, to avoid a second meter in some situations.
As a rule of thumb, single phase sites with one switchboard are typically fine to install one meter, 3-phase sites or sites with multiple switchboards may require an additional meter.
Things to do before installing the Clipsal Cortex™ Meter(s)
Hide ShowThere are three things to pay attention to before installing the Clipsal Cortex™ Meter(s):
- Review the site’s switchboard layout
- Create a current transformer (CT) design
- Label CTs, meter(s) and switchboard
Review the site’s switchboard layout
Each Clipsal Cortex™ meter takes up two poles in a switchboard. The meter must also be powered by a 10A or less breaker with the same number of phases as the home. Single-phase houses only need a single pole breaker, while 3-phase houses will require a three-pole breaker.
Note: It is possible to piggyback the meter’s power supply from an existing 10A or less breaker such as lights to save space in the switchboard.

Some examples are; hot water, pool pumps, electric vehicle chargers and aircon. We strongly recommend using the CT Design Form from our ‘Installer Guides’ section to keep track of what each CT is connected to as it will be required when commissioning using the Clipsal Cortex™ Fleet app.
Label CTs, meter(s) and switchboard
It is strongly recommended to label the CTs, Meter and Switchboard with the supplies stickers as they will save significant time when commissioning and troubleshooting the system. Place the serial number on the front of the meter, otherwise you will not be able to see the meter’s serial when the switchboard enclosure is closed.

Note: It is the installer’s responsibility to ensure that these stickers are compliant with local jurisdictions wiring rules.
Cortex™ Meter Troubleshooting
Hide ShowPlease refer to the tables below for troubleshooting purposes if there is any issue with your relevant device.
CX1 & CX1-SW

CX2-MB-SW

General Troubleshooting: Generally, if the meter is stuck on anything except solid lights, then power cycle the meter.
How to power cycle your Cortex Meter (CX1 & CX1-SW)
Hide ShowTo power cycle CX1 & CX1-SW:
Turn the connected breaker that’s powering the meter(s) off, wait until all 3 lights have turned off and approximately 15 minutes before turning it back on.
No lights are on
If no lights are coming on, check if P1 in the voltage terminal block is receiving voltage. If it is receiving voltage, the meter is likely faulty. Contact support to run through additional troubleshooting methods and organise a warranty case.
Only L1 is on or flashing
If only the L1 light is solid or flashing, try power cycling the device. If the problem persists, then contact support.
L1 is solid, L2 is flashing continuously (searching for network)
If the meter has begun searching for a network and becomes stuck in this stage, check the cellular reception at the meter and try changing the orientation of the antenna. If it doesn’t solve the issue, you may need to install an external or high gain antenna to improve reception. If the problem persists with good reception, try power cycling the device or contact support.
