Why and when should I use a line choke upstream from an ATV31,ATV312, ATV61, ATV71 variable speed drive?

A line choke is used to provide better protection against overvoltages on the line supply and to reduce the harmonic distortion of the current produced by the drive.
 

The recommended chokes limit the drive line current and they have been developed in line with standard EN 50178 (VDE 0160 level 1 high-energy overvoltages on the line supply).
 

These chokes should be installed upstream of the drive.
 

The use of line chokes is recommended in particular under the following circumstances:
 

  • Close connection of several drives in parallel
  • Line supply with significant disturbance from other equipment (interference, overvoltages)
  • Line supply with voltage imbalance between phases above 1.8% of the nominal voltage
  • Drive power supplied by a line with very low impedance (in the vicinity of power transformers 10 times more powerful than the drive rating)
  • Installation of a large number of frequency inverters on the same line

Resolution:
It is NOT recommended to operate an ATV680 AFE on a 480V power system with a voltage unbalance of 4% to 7.5%. This is far outside the specification of the drive.
The mains voltage must comply with the requirements according to IEC 60038 and EN 50160: 
- Unbalance between phases: < 2 % 
- Total harmonic factor THD(v): < 10 % 
- Maximum single harmonic: < 5 %
With this supply voltage the drive complies with the specified THDi value.
 
If the voltage unbalance is 2 … 4% the drive will work but the THDi value will be higher than specified. A voltage unbalance of more than 4% will harm the drive. The input IGBT might overheat and/or the fuses might blow due to unsymmetrical input current. There is also a risk of oscillations if the voltage controller is not able to keep DC bus voltage constant.
 

STB NIP 2212 Advantys Ethernet NIM Exec. Upgrade to version 2.1.3

Goals and Symptoms

The purpose of this resolution is to inform users of Advantys Ethernet Network Interface Module (NIM) STBNIP2212 that the Exec. has been upgraded to version 2.1.3.

Facts and Changes

Exec. v.2.1.3 resolves the following issues:

  1. The Ethernet NIM could lockup or temporarily freeze when queried at rates less than 5ms.
  2. When queried at fast rates (< 5ms), the large variation in response time has been minimized.
  3. Error reporting issue when populated with only input modules. When an Ethernet connection to a communicating NIM is broken and re-established, the emergency message registers (45375 - 45382) continue to display module errors and the Island Configuration web page continues to display Node Error next to the modules listed.
  4. When a third party module is hot swapped on the CANopen Extension, it would not configure properly if it did not issue a Reset within 3 seconds. This parameter in the STBNIP2212 has been increased to 30 seconds for devices that take longer than 3 seconds to reset.
  5. Corrects a problem when the NIM was released from test mode. Outputs would operate for approximately 50ms, go to falback for about 50ms, and then come back to RUN state.
  6. Corrects problem hot swapping input modules in an operating STBNIP2212 connected island after the Ethernet cable has been disconnected from the NIM. Removing the NIM Ethernet connection, hot swapping an input module, then reconnecting the cable results in the hot swapped module readings to be zero and its RDY (Ready) LED blinks rapidly. A power cycle restores proper operation.
  7. The number of connections to the NIM has been reduced from 32 to 16. If more than 16 connections are attempted, the NIM will drop the oldest connection and accept the new one.

    The Ethernet NIM Exec. version 2.1.3 is at a Transparent Ready B10 classification.

Emergency Power Supply System (EPSS) Reports Show Multiple Generator Starts And Stops

Issue
When an EPSS report is showing multiple starts and stops for a generator, there is a good chance the debounce settings need to be changed. Here is an example of a report where this is happening:

Taking a look at generator #1 (the yellow bars), the report shows that the generator started at 12:58:13.103 and stopped at 12:58:13.157, only a 54 millisecond difference. The same is happening in generator #2 (the green bars), a 56 millisecond difference.

Cause
CM4000 meters with firmware versions of 14.400 or older had a maximum debounce time of 50ms, and the only options were 5ms and 50ms (newer firmwares allowed more options). In the above example, when the difference in time between the starting and stopping of the generator is more than 50 milliseconds, this issue can be corrected by editing the debounce register. The debounce setting is actually a measurement of the vibration caused by the relay tripping. This vibration is supposed to dissipate within a few milliseconds, but sometimes takes longer.

The default setting for the debounce register is 5 milliseconds, but this can be reconfigured to as high as 200ms in 5ms increments depending on the currently installed firmware version.

Resolution
In some cases, like the one illustrated above, the chosen debounce time may not be high enough for the vibration to dissipate, so try a higher value if needed (200ms maximum).

Note: The procedure to change the debounce time will be different based on what your meter firmware is.

A register write is required to change the debounce setting. In the illustrated example, the customer has an IOC44 in Slot B of the CM4000, and has the generator statuses wired to I/O Points 19, 20, 21, and 22. The debounce setting is held in the base I/O register +11. These are the register writes to change the debounce settings for this example configuration to 200ms:

If you have firmware version that is higher than 14.400, then you would use the following modified procedure to get a 200ms debounce time:

Register 8000 -> 9020 for command mode
Register 4851 -> 200 for debounce register for IO Point 19
Register 4881 -> 200 for debounce register for IO Point 20
Register 4911 -> 200 for debounce register for IO Point 21
Register 4941 -> 200 for debounce register for IO Point 22
Register 8001 -> 1 for saving changes
Register 8000 -> 9021 for closing command mode

Once the debounce setting is changed, it will ignore any vibration signal that occurs in the first 200 milliseconds of the relay switching.

If you have firmware version 14.385 beta, then you would use the following modified procedure to get a 200ms debounce time:

Register 8000 -> 9020 for command mode
Register 4851 -> 1 for debounce register for IO Point 19
Register 4881 -> 1 for debounce register for IO Point 20
Register 4911 -> 1 for debounce register for IO Point 21
Register 4941 -> 1 for debounce register for IO Point 22
Register 8001 -> 1 for saving changes
Register 8000 -> 9021 for closing command mode

If you have firmware version 14.400 or less then you would use the following procedure to get a 50ms debounce time (50ms is the maximum with these firmware versions):

Register 8000 -> 9020 for command mode
Register 4851 -> 1 for debounce register for IO Point 19
