                          Goals and Symptoms

We've applyed ATS48D32Q on thread cutting lathe drive. In special case, they need immediate reverse. With dynamic braking we were able to stop device for 3-5 sec, because of high inertia. But this is too long time for this application. Now, Is it possible provide immediate reverse by the switch reverse line or by-pass contactor if ATS is in run mode? May we try it without damage power parts?

                          Facts and Changes

                          immediate reverse

                          Causes and Fixes

The ATS don't respond to this application, I propose you to use an ATV with braking resistor. You can also stop the motor in free wheel mode , inverse a motor phase ( see user manual ) and restart the motor with a long acceleretion ramp ( adjust the current limitation )

What I think this means is that if you put a value of 1 in word 4090, the most recent fault will be reported in W4091. If you put a 2 in 4090, you will read the next oldest fault in 4091. 4090 is used as a pointer, and 4091 is used to display the value that is pointed to.

                          All

                          Cause:
ATS48 getting an OHF fault. Fault does not appear in the Installation Guide bulletin #30072-450-61

                          Resolution:
OHF indicates a starter thermal fault.

                          Recommendations:
Check the mechanism (wear, mechanical play, lubrication, blockages, etc.).
Check the sizing of the starter in relation to the motor and the mechanical requirement.
Check the operation of the fan, ensuring that the air passage is not obstructed in any way and the heatsink is clean.
Ensure that the mounting recommendations are observed.
Check ambient temp around the starter. Wait for the ATS48 to cool before restarting.

OHF was omitted from the Installation Guide bulletin #30072-450-61 but will be included in the next release of the manual.

In the 30072-450-61 manual for the ATS48 on page 76, it shows contacts for ``KM1`` & ``KM2``. What are they?

                          Issue:
What is the meaning in the wiring diagram of the contacts labelled KM1 and KM2 feeding into the IC1 forward contactor and IC2 reverse contactor?

                          Cause:
Typo error in the instruction bulletin

                          Resolution:
This is an error in the manual.  KM1 should be labelled IC1 and KM2 should be labelled IC2.
These are auxiliary contacts from the forward and reverse isolation contactors, used for electrical interlocking.  This helps prevent closure of both contactors at the same time.

Need to know whether a contactor or breaker needs to be used

                          Resolution:
Since the solid-state switches may be incapable of completely blocking the motor power should a fault occur, auxiliary isolation on the line side of the controller is required. Use either a circuit breaker equipped with a shunt trip coil or an electromagnetic contactor. Connect the isolation device to the fault relay of the controller so that it opens the controller power circuit in the event of a controller fault. The isolation device must be capable of interrupting motor locked rotor current.

                          Environment:
                          All models, all serial numbers.

                          Cause:
                          high or low ambient temperatures.

                          Resolution:
The standard current ratings for the ATS22 is based on an ambient temperature of 40C (104F).

The minimum operating temperature is -10C (14F).  The maximum operating temperature is 60C (140F).
When operating above 40C (104F), the softstart needs to be derated by 2.2% for every degree Celsius above 40C (104F).

                          For example:  ATS22D32S6U is 32A rated.  For an ambient temperature of 50C (122F), derating is 22% (2.2 x 10).  The 32A softstart rating becomes 24.96A (32A x 0.78 = 24.96).

The ATS22 does not display current on LCr2, do I have a faulty unit?

This is normal operation because the ATS22.../Q has CT's installed in the U and W phases only, no sensor installed in the V phase.

On the ATS22..S6 ( dedicated mainly for US market) three CT's are used and LcR2 indicates a value. The three sensors are used in US market because the ground fault detection is mandatory.

                          Resolution:
The programming and the dimensions will be different. In most cases the ATS48 is smaller than the equivalent ATS46. Please refer to the Instruction Bulletins referenced in this document.

                          Control voltage differences
ATS46 used a multitap CPT accepting control voltage up to 500Vac
ATS48 does not have an internal CPT and will only accept control voltage between 90Vac and 270Vac.
If existing control voltage is over 240Vac, an external control transformer may be required to step down the voltage to an acceptable range.
The control power burden varies with ATS48 size:
                          ATS48D17Y and ATS48D22Y require 25 Watts.
                          ATS48D32Y, ATS48D38Y, ATS48D47Y, ATS48D62Y, ATS48D75Y, ATS48D88Y, ATS48C11Y, ATS48C14Y, and ATS48C17Y require 30 Watts.
                          ATS48C21Y, ATS48C25Y, and ATS48C32Y require 50 Watts
                          ATS48C41Y, ATS48C48Y, ATS48C59Y, ATS48C66Y, ATS48C79Y, ATS48M10Y and ATS48M12Y require 80 Watts.

                          Fault relays
ATS46 had a Fault Relay with both NO and NC contacts (NO terminals are R1A and R1C. NC terminals are R1B and R1D).
ATS48 only has 1 NO fault relay, R1A-R1C.
If existing control wiring used the NC R1B-R1D, then add an interposing relay controlled by the R1A-R1C relay to keep that functionality.

Power Terminals for the optional shorting contactor
                          ATS46 had 6 terminals for the optional Shorting contactor: A1 B1 C1 and A2 B2 C2
                          ATS48 only has 3 terminals: A2 B2 C2
The ATS48 L1, L2, L3 terminals are for incoming 3-phase line power connections. This may require that separate terminal blocks be used to connect the line side of the shorting (bypass) contactor. Consider adding a power terminal block to split the power circuit to feed both the ATS48 L1L2L3 terminals and line side terminals L1L2L3 of the shorting contactor.

In some cases as described above you may need add several components to make the conversion work.
1: Step down control power transformer
                          2: Interposing control relay
                          3: Power terminal block

                          Cause:
                          N/A

                          Resolution:
We do not have any safety features implemented in ATS22/48, no any safety validated scheme, certificate etc.
However, one can use a  typical category 4 safety scheme where the ATSxx is connected just before the motor:
                          See attachment

Safety is based on safety elements (relays, contactors, safety PLC...) and the ATSxx operates like a motor.
ATSxx does store any energy (no capacitors) so safety contactors are doing safety cut-off the ATSxx+motor.

Video: Is Small-Load or No-Motor Operation Possible on Altistart 22?

Need for testing starter with minimal or no load attached.

                          Resolution:
No, SSt is a feature of the ATS48 soft start.  It is not available on the ATS22.
It has to have a load at the output.

Why does an ATS22 controlled stop not bring the motor to a complete stop at the end of ramp time?

                          Issue:
ATS22 does not follow the decel ramp.

                          Environment:
                          All ATS22

                          Cause:
                          Ramp time is short.

                          Resolution:
The ATS22 cannot produce braking torque during the deceleration ramp. It can only produce driving torque. Therefore, the deceleration ramp can extend the stopping time by ramping down the driving torque. It cannot reduce the stopping time to less than a normal coast to stop.

When a braking feature is required, use a variable speed drive and consider an optional DB resistor.

                          Internal detected fault

                          Resolution:
Internal serial link fault means the soft starter control card is not communicated with the power board.   Try reseating the ribbon cable that connects the control card to the power board.   If this does not resolve the issue, repairs or replaces the soft start.
