      Why is my AP9622 APC Building Management Card inaccessible after changing the slave ID?


      Upon configuring the AP9622 APC Building Management Card with a slave ID of 13 (0x0D) specifically, the AP9622's configuration menu becomes inaccessible yet the AP9622 continues to output modbus data.

      A firmware bug exists in the AP9622 product. The use of slave ID 13 (0x0D) causes the AP9622 configuration menu to become inaccessible, thus prior device settings cannot be changed. These device settings include the port speed, parity, and slave ID.


      Slave ID 13 (0x0D) should not be used.

      If this situation has already been encountered, please contact technical support for assistance. If the AP9622 product is under factory warranty, it will be replaced under RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization). Please note the AP9622 product can still provide Modbus data in this state as mentioned previously. The AP9622 product will still communicate via the configured port speed, parity, and slave ID, however if these settings need to be changed, the AP9622 will need to be replaced.

      The AP9622 supports the following UPS series:

      Note: The Galaxy 3500 UPS is supported by the AP9622, however some specific Symmetra 3-phase registers may report back but others will not work properly unless in a 3:3 configuration.

      Note: Smart-UPS VT, AIS3000, and SURT15K/SURT20K units use the Symmetra maps and AIS5000 uses the Silcon maps.

      The AP9622 card supports RS-232 Modbus/JBUS output. Users may require RS-485 adapters to work with an existing Building Management System. Refer to compatibility list below.


      The Building Management Integration Card (AP9622) will work with the following RS-232 to RS-485 converters:
      • B&B Electronics P/N: 485OT9L*
      *Item is currently discontinued per B&B. The recommended replacement is 4WSD9OTB but it has not been tested with the AP9622.

      APC step down transformers come with two fans installed. One is the primary AC fan that is used for forced air cooling of the transformer. The second is an auxiliary fan which comes on when the internal temperature of the transformer exceeds 100°F.  The AC fans are necessary to cool the transformer for proper operation. Two fans were installed to provide redundancy in the event that the primary fan fails. When the auxiliary fan is activated, it increases the air flow in the event that high temperatures are reached within the transformer unit. If the first fan fails due to a mechanical defect or damage, the transformer will be cooled solely by the auxiliary fan.

      Which SmartSlot accessories are supported by the Galaxy 3500 (G3500) UPS?

      The list below details what accessories are supported by the Galaxy 3500 UPS (G3500) and what measures must be taken to utilize them.


      • Network Management Card 2 - AP9630/30CH, AP9631/31CH

      The APC Network Management Card 2 SKUs AP9630/30CH and AP9631/31CH can be utilized with the G3500 UPS. The Network Management Card must be loaded with the sumx firmware application 5.0.3 or higher. The AP9631 ships with the G3500 UPS.

      The AP9810 Relay I/O dongle can also used with the AP9631 Network Management Card 2 to have dry contact functionality - (2) inputs, (1) output per AP9810 with a maximum of (2) AP9810 that can be attached.

      • Building Management Card (BMS) - AP9622

      The AP9622 BMS card is supported in the G3500 UPS. It can utilize some of the 3-phase Symmetra bit register/modbus map, which can be found on the AP9622 product page, but other registers may not report properly if you are not in a 3:3 configuration.


      • Dry Contact I/O SmartSlot Card - AP9610 or AP9613

      The AP9610 or AP9613 is supported in the G3500 UPS. For AP9610 (or AP9613 utilizing dip switch configurations only) you must use Configuration 2, as mentioned in knowledge base FA156152.  Alternatively, Configuration 4 and the onboard configuration utility can be utilized on the AP9613.

      Unfortunately, if you use the included APC accessory terminal screw board with the AP9610, the front panel/UPS door will not close correctly. In order to avoid this issue, there are a few options you can look into.

      1.) Purchase a right angle DB25 Male-Female interconnection

      2.) Utilize an APC AP9600 single slot SmartSlot expansion chassis and extend the cable to the AP9600 with a 940-1500 serial cable. This communication cable can be routed so that the chassis can sit on top of the UPS. If using an AP9600, the NMC AP9630 or AP9631 should be in the AP9600 expansion chassis and the AP9610 should be in the SmartSlot in the UPS frame. This is the proper installation order per knowledge base article ID FA156034. (Note: This required installation order also applies to AP9613.)

      3.) Use an AP9604 SmartSlot triple chassis which comes with a 10' cable. This communication cable can be routed so that the chassis can sit on top of the UPS. Also, if do not want to use the included accessory board, you can make your own cable, using the pinout in the AP9610 user's guide and avoid buying a right angle 25 pin extension cable.

      4.) If using both an NMC and AP9610 or AP9613, put both the put the AP9610 or AP9613 and the NMC2 in the AP9604 triple chassis, referencing the correct installation order mentioned in knowledge base article ID FA156034 to ensure proper function of both the NMC2 and AP9610 or AP9613.

      • SmartSlot Serial Interface Expander - AP9607, AP9607CB, AP9624

      The SmartSlot serial interface expander can be used with the G3500 to supply two dedicated simple signaling ports, such as for use with an AS/400 or an IBM iSeries, if required.

      The Interface Expander 2 (AP9624) is also supposed by the G3500 and was released in mid-2014 to replace AP9607 and AP9607CB.


      Recommendations and Best Practices for the AP9622 Building Management Card


      The following document outlines some recommended configuration settings for using the AP9622 with a Building Management System. The information is intended to help maintain reliable communication with the device and help troubleshoot where applicable.

      When the AP9622 is not working as expected, please refer to the helpful hints listed below to help remedy the problem and find the root cause.

      For each register, 500ms is recommended. Each Modbus register read causes the card to poll the UPS for that piece of data and therefore, the timeout needs to scale with the number of registers polled per request. To allow for unforseen circumstances, it is suggested to use the following equation to calculate the timeout: 500 ms * (number of registers) + 100 ms = Total Timeout

      It is recommended to poll blocks of 10 supported registers (or less) at a time.

      Scan Rates

      It is suggested to configure your scan rate no less than 1000ms. Please keep in mind this setting may still need to be adjusted depending on the number of devices, size of your queries, and the length of the serial bus.


      In order to troubleshoot an issue involving the AP9622, begin by noting the following items:
      • What is the firmware revision of the AP9622? (a letter revision found on the physical card or through the configuration menu)
      • What port settings are being used?
      • Are any adapters being used? (supported RS-485 adapters noted in FA156062) - In addition to adapters, are any other devices being used (i.e. Modbus Gateway)?
      • How many devices are on the same communication bus as the AP9622?
      • Please describe the communication bus, length, type of wiring, termination and the other devices.
      • Which register map is being used? (these register maps are generally available on or
      • What are the current timeout/scan rate settings set to?
      • Which specific registers are timing out?
      • How many are being read at a time?
      • Has communication been confirmed between the AP9622 and a computer using the 940-0103 APC configuration cable? (if no data is being read)
      • Which UPS model is the AP9622 installed in? What is the firmware version of the UPS?
      • If applicable, is the UPS configured for any type of redundant or parallel operation modes?
      • Are there any other APC Accessory devices in use (for example, a Network Management Card)? If so, describe the configuration and where each device is installed.

      Which Silcon Triple Chassis firmware revision is required for the AP9622 to communicate with the Silcon?

      The Silcon Triple Chassis needs to be Rev 12 or higher in order to work with the AP9622 card. If you have an earlier revision of the Silcon Triple chassis, you will lose functionality on the AP9622.
