      In order for the XW inverter to sell to grid, the unit requires DC Coupled source of energy supplying the battery bank. DC Coupling means the DC renewable energy source must be regulated to the battery bank voltage. The XW inverters do not have a PV input. These inverters require Solar Charge Controllers (SCC) (or regulated DC from wind/hydro using diversion controller) to be able to function in grid support or sell mode. The charging source must to be able to perform 3-Stage charging on the batteries, otherwise the inverter will not be able to harvest the power being produced by the source(s).

      What is the difference between the C-series SCC and the MPPT-series SCC?

      Explanation of the C-series and the MPPT-series Solar Charge Controllers

       Schneider Electric manufactures two types of Solar Charge Controllers, the C-series and the MPPT-series. This document will provide a basic understanding of how each unit works and what are the key differences between the two series. 

      First lets talk about the C-series:

      This units come on three difference sizes, C35, C40, and C60. Each one of them is rated for 35A, 40A, and 60A of charging respectively. The C-series works using PWM, which stands for Pulse Width Modulation. PWM works as a series of pulses which provide ON/OFF switching to a voltage source based on a time frame, the average between the pulses width provides the voltage needed. The following is an image that provides and example of the information described above.

      Now lets cover the MPPT-series:

      This units come on two different sizes, MPPT60-150 and the MPPT80-600. Each one of this units can provide 60A of charging and 80A of charging respectively. The MPPT units use an algorithm called Maximum Power Point Tracking. MPPT algorithm considers several aspects of the power being provided by the PV Panels in order to harvest as much power as it can possibly get. The two main aspects it monitors is the Voltage (V) versus Current (I) curve. This units will lock their capability of harvest on what is called the knee curve. The knee curve is a basic Voltage versus Current curve that provide the efficiency of the PV panels. The best efficiency point of this curve is right where the voltage and the current curve hit the same point, which look like a knee, hence the name of the curve. The following graph shows a normal V vs. I curve.


       Notice that the MPPT harvest point is the BLUE line that is plotted accross each curve.

      Now lets talk about the differences between PWM and MPPT :
      PWM is a less efficient unit than the MPPT
      , because the C-series acts like a switch that connects the array to the battery, i.e. the battery voltage will determine the operating voltage of the modules. For this reason, the C-series requires the array to be configured to the same nominal voltage as the battery bank that is going to be charge with it. The MPPT series can track the maximum power voltage throughout the entire range of input PV voltage (at least 5VDC higher than the target BULK voltage up to the maximum MPPT voltage). The MPPT cannot "boost" from a lower PV voltage to a higher charge voltage, however.

      When the charge indicator shows "Charge Not OK", the breaker contacts are open and the charging spring is inhibited for some reason. This reason must be cleared before the breaker can be closed. The status indicator may indicate this for multiple reasons:

      UVR not energized.
      Shunt Trip that is energized.
      Padlock attachment pulled out or not aligned (try loosening the cover or taking it off to realign the attachment).
      Push to Close button is partially depressed.

      Motor will not run

      Resolution:
      O.CF is a phase-to-phase motor short circuit fault.  Check motor windings and motor leads for a possible shorting path. A Megger test at a 1,000V of the motor and motor leads should be performed.
      You can also try running the drive "open circuit" and see it faults without the motor connected
      1. ​Turn off Output Phase Loss (OPL)
      2. Power down and disconnect the motor leads from the drive
      3. Run the drive at 20, 40, and 60Hz and measure output voltage phase-to-phase checking for balanced voltage 

      Other possible related fault codes are OCF and OC.F:
      OCF is an overcurrent fault.  Possible causes are incorrect settings in the SET and DRC menus, excessive loading on the motor or mechanical binding.
      OC.F is an impedance short-circuit fault.  This is a detected short-circuit or grounding at the drive output. Check the cables connecting the drive to the motor and the motor insulation.  A Megger test at a 1,000V of the motor and motor leads should be performed.

      Doing Firmware upgrade over ComBox using a PC.

      Issue:

      Customer or technician wants to perform a firmware upgrade using the ComBox.

      Resolution:


      IMPORTANT: All devices that need the firmware upgraded must be on standby prior upgrading process can start. Combox must have an independent power source if upgrading the Inverter/Charger in the network.  During the upgrade, the Inverter/Charger will stop providing power to Xanbus, causing loss of communications with the Combox.
       

      If using a PC the firmware file must be uploaded on the ComBox by selecting the UnZipped file and storing it inside the Combox. First we will select the settings tap and select upload (See Fig 1.a). Once in there you will select the "click to select" field and select the firmware file (.xf0). After the upload is completed you will select the device (from the device drop down) that you want the firmware upgraded. Usually the firmware file will be selected automatically. After this process is completed you will just click the upgrade button and the upgrade will start.

      IMPORTANT: If the firmware for the ComBox itself is 1.02 then the AGS's firmware would not be upgraded. This can be corrected by upgrading Combox firmware : https://solar.schneider-electric.com/product/conext-combox/
