How do you wire and program for a dynamic braking resistor on Altivar drives?

Issue:
Wiring and programming for dynamic braking resistor on AC drives?

Product Line:
Altivar ATV31, ATV312, ATV32,  ATV61, ATV71,

Environment:
All with the optional dynamic braking resistor.

Cause:
DB resistor is not turning on to stop the motor quickly

Resolution:
The DB resistor is wired to power terminals PA and PB.

Programming:
For ATV31/ATV312/ATV32 go to Fun menu, then RPt sub menu and set brA to NO.
For ATV61/ATV71 Go to Menu 1.7 [Application Function} and then Ramp sub menu and set Dec Ramp Adapt to NO.

Note: ATV630 Process Drives are not designed to be used with dynamic braking resistors.

Issue:
Activating automatic restart function on the Altivar Process drives

Product Line:
Altivar Process Drive (ATV630, ATV930, ATV650, ATV950, ATV660, ATV960, ATV680, ATV980)

Environment:
All Products of Altivar Process Drive 

Cause:
Automatic restart after fault.

Resolution:
Automatic restart will only work if the drive is being controlled from the terminal strip in 2 wire control (will not work in HMI mode or while using Serial Communication) If the fault is resettable and the run command is maintained.

Go into Complete Settings, Command and reference, and set 2 wire type to level control.
Go into Complete Settings, Error/Warning Handling, Auto fault reset, and set auto fault reset to yes.
The drive will attempt to reset the fault for the length of time programmed in the Fault Reset Time parameter (default is 5 minutes) as long as the run command remains present on the drive.

It is also advisable to activate to Catch on the Fly in case the motor is already spinning when the drive restarts. (Complete Settings -> Error/Warning Handling)


Conditions that have to be met:
Must be in 2 wire control with run command present.
The automatic restart function has to be activated.
The condition that caused fault code has to have been resolved.  

The lists of fault codes that can be cleared automatically are listed in the ATV600 Programming Manual and ATV900 Programming Manual.


 

Why is the LCD display screen blank on a Micrologic Power or Harmonic type trip unit on a Powerpact P frame, R frame, or Masterpact circuit breaker?

Issue:
Why is the display blank on the trip unit?

Product Line:
Powerpact P frame, Powerpact R Frame, Masterpact NT, Masterpact NW

Resolution:
The LCD display on a Micrologic P or H trip unit will be blank unless the trip unit is energized.  Energization requires one of the following sets of conditions:
  1. The trip unit is energized by an external 24 Vdc applied to terminals F1-F2 (F1 negative-F2 positive)
  2. The trip unit is energized by an FFTK or HHTK test kit
  3. There is at least 100 V between two phases, AND the load reaches approximately 20% of the breaker's rated current.
  • Note that the display will not power up with primary injection testing unless one of the conditions in bullet 1 above is met.
  • Note that Ammeter trip units do not require external power and the display will come on with sufficient current flow alone.

Can I use a larger HP Variable Speed Drive to run a smaller HP motor?

Issue:
Motor is smaller than the available drive.

Product Line:
All Altivar (ATV) drives

Environment:

Cause:
Motor and drive sizing does not match.  Motor is smaller HP than Drive.

Resolution:
YES.
In most cases a drive can control a motor with lower HP (and current) rating.

The motor nameplate information will have to be entered correctly to ensure proper control of the motor and that the overload protection is enabled.   
In most cases the Overload protection adjustment range is the limiting factor.  If this parameter can not be set down to the motor FLA, an external overload relay will have to be provided.
When using small motors on a larger drive the Sensorless Flux Vector motor control modes may not work well.  Changing the motor control type to linear Voltage/Frequency is usually best.
Consult the programming manual for the drive being used for details on these parameter adjustments.
If working with an enclosed drive that has full voltage bypass, the Overload Relay in the bypass circuit may need to be changed if it's OL settings can not be adjusted down to the motor FLA.

NOTE that this does not pertain to Softstarts.   Softstarts will not work well with motors that are less than 40% of their continuous current rating.

All serial numbers for ATV21 and ATV212

Cause:
Certain faults can be automatically reset after the cause has cleared.  The drive will then restart the motor.

Resolution: 
Set F303 to any value, from 1 to 10, indicating the number of attempts to clear the detected fault. 
By factory default F303 is set to 0. A value of 0 disables the feature.
If the fault clears, the drive will restart the motor if the run command is active.
If the fault does not clear after all attempts are made, the drive will require a manual reset.

The first clear is attempted 1 second after the detected fault occurs.  Each subsequent clear attempt adds 1 second to the time interval between attempts.
