Line Interactive Smart-UPS (SU, SUA, SMT) products with a ""T"" in the suffix of the part number are designed for a nominal 208v input. (Ex: SU5000T, SUA3000XLT, etc). Although transfer points can be widened to allow the unit to function online with a higher input voltage, the unit is not designed for this and will ultimately run into issues.

Problems in this type of configuration include:

  • Short runtime due to repeatedly switching to battery operation
  • Unintentional load drops due to discharged batteries
  • Shortened battery life due to frequent discharges
  • UPS Not turning back on after a power outage due to high input voltage
  • Increased wear and tear on the UPS hardware by continuous mode switching

Using a 208v ""T"" unit in a 220/230/240v environment is not supported or recommended.

The web page for each product will list a nominal input voltage, and if any other input voltages are acceptable they will be listed as ""Other Input Voltages"". 

There are several other Smart-UPS products that will function in a 220/230/240v environment without issue:

SURT and SURTD Units (Ex: SURTD3000XLT, SURT6000XLT, etc) - These models use a Double Conversion Online Topology that allows them to have a very wide range of  input voltages without the use of boost/trim transformers. The only change needed is to set the output voltage of the UPS to match the nominal input voltage to ensure proper output when operating in bypass mode. Output voltage can be set via a network management card or Powerchute Business Edition.

How to Calculate the Required Capacity kVA Rating or Amperage Capacity for Single and Three Phase Transformers

Issue:
Calculation of kVA capacity for a Single or Three Phase Transformer, based on Winding Voltage and Amperage information.
 
 
Environment:
Applies to all Single and Three Phase Transformers.
 
Cause:
kVA sizing must often be calculated from Primary or Secondary Winding Voltage and Amperage information.
 
Resolution:

To determine kVA you must have at least two pieces of information:  

  1. the load line-to-line voltage (V)
  2. the maximum load phase current (I)

Single Phase Transformers: kVA = (V * I) /1000
Three Phase Transformers:  kVA = (V * I * 1.732) / 1000
where 1.732 is the simple numerical value for the square root of 3 (1.7320508...)
Then round up to the next standard 3ph kVA rating as found in Section 14 of SquareD/Schneider Electric Catalog, Digest 177.

Single Phase Transformer Example: V = 240, I = 175; Therefore: kVA = (240 x 175) / 1000 = 42 kVA
This calculates to 42 kVA, thus we round up to a standard Single Phase size 50kVA.  From the Digest, an EE50S3H will satisfactorily serve this load.

Three Phase Transformer Example:  V = 208, I = 175; Therefore: kVA = (208 x 175 x 1.732) / 1000 = 63.05kVA
This calculates to 63+ kVA, thus we round up to a standard Three Phase size 75kVA.  From the Digest, an EX75T3H will satisfactorily serve this load.

Note:  This is a sample kVA calculation and does not take into account possible special load requirements, such as found with motors or some medical equipment, or other specialty applications.


Amperage provided for a given KVA can be determined by similar techniques:

Single Phase Example:  Using a 50 KVA Single Phase Transformer as a starting point.  50KVA is equal to 50,000 VA. (K= 1,000)  The full value in VA, 50,000 is then divided by the Voltage 240V = 208 Amperes.  This is a "Two Step Division", technique:  VA / Voltage = Amperage

Three Phase Example:  Using a 75 KVA Three Phase Transformer as a starting point.  75 KVA is equal to 75,000 VA. (K= 1,000)  The full value in VA, 75,000 divided by 1.732 = 43,302, which is then divided by the Voltage 208V = 208.2 Amperes.  This is a "Three Step Division", technique:  VA / 1.732 / Voltage = Amperage


As an alternative to these calculations, you may prefer to use the charts below.  Standard KVA sizes are shown on the left margin, Standard Line-to-Line Voltages are shown along the top margin. 

Chart Example:  Using the numbers from the earlier Three Phase Transformer Example V=208, I=175.  Use the chart titled "Three Phase Low Voltage Dry Type Transformers".  Following the 208V top margin entry, and reading down vertically, it is seen that the first entry in that 208V vertical column that will cover 175A, and then some, is 208A, which indicates a 75 KVA Transformer, shown in the next over vertical column to the left.

Resolution:
The message displayed on the screen (LEFT or RIGHT) indicates the side of the station where the incoming power lines should be swapped.

Systems using 208Y should arrange breakers accordingly to ensure correct phase usage.

Hardwiring to 120v, 208v, and 240v loads from a 208v/240v SmartUPS RT UPS

Hardwiring to 120v, 208v, and 240v loads from a 208v/240v SmartUPS RT  UPS

All models with "T" in the suffix of the part number. (IE: SURT3000XLT, SURT8000RMXLT6U)
Note: This does *NOT* include SURTD5000RMXLP3U or SURTD6000RMXLP3U. These two models are split phase 4 wire (Hot/Hot/Neutral/Ground) units and do not require a stepdown transformer to support 120v loads.

Cause:

Smart-UPS RT units designed for 208v/240v environments have unbalanced 3 wire outputs and require a transformer to supply 120v loads.

Resolution:
  • The 208V/240V Smart-UPS RT is a single phase UPS with a 3 wire unbalanced output.
  • They require 2 hots and a ground on the input, and 2 hots and a ground on the output.
  • They do not use a neutral.
  • They require a stepdown transformer to power 120v loads and provide a Neutral

The output of the UPS is unbalanced, meaning that from hot to hot you will see 208 volts (or 240v if so configured), however it is not two balanced 120 volt legs as you would traditionally see from 208v/240v utility power. The two output legs are 180 degrees out of phase and from hot to hot they will measure 208v or 240v. All of these units default to 208v out and can be configured to 240v via the network management card or LCD interface.

Attempting to hardwire out to a 120V load without the use of a transformer will result in load drops and possible load damage!

In addition to a selection of smaller 5kva plug in step-down transformers, APC manufactures 3 larger hardwire step-downs in 10kva and 20kva capacities - APTF10KT01APTF10KW01, and the APTF20KW01
All three of these units create their output in a similar fashion. A neutral is created via a center tap on the transformer.

To supply a 120 v load, the transformer provides:

  • 2 120 volt legs that are 180 degrees out of phase
  • Ground
  • Neutral

This creates a traditional 240 v/120 v panel where there are 2 legs of 120 v and from hot to hot you would measure 240 volts.

To supply a 208 v load, the transformer provides:

  • 120 v Hot Leg
  • 88 v Hot Leg (180 degrees out of phase from the 120 v leg)
  • Ground

In this configuration you would measure 208 volts from Hot to Hot.

For detailed wiring directions, diagrams, and specifications, please consult the users manual for your step-down transformer.

Using both of these configurations you can support both 208v and 120v loads, however you are not able to output to a traditional 208v / 120v panel where there are 2 120v legs that are 120 degrees out of phase. If a 208v / 120v output panel is required you must use one of our split phase solutions. We offer 2 split phase RT units (SURTD5000RMXLP3U and SURTD6000RMXLP3U) as well as the entire Symmetra LX line. A split phase UPS will require a 4 wire input and will output 2 balanced 120 v legs, a ground, and a neutral. The split phase RT units will require the SURT018 hardwire kit to be used in a hardwired application.

Resolution:

This document refers to installing  the APTF10KT01, APTF10KW01, and APTF20KW01 transformers in a North American 120/240 or 120/208 environment. For installations in other regions please consult the users manual.

The wiring block outputs are as follows:


For domestic use, make sure that the Terminal Block Jumper is installed between the Ground Terminal and Terminal 8 on the output wiring block, as illustrated on page 8 of the user manual. Please also make sure that the input voltage switch is in the correct position.

The step-down transformer provides 240/120 output as 2 120v hots, a neutral, and a ground. It provides 208v output as a 120v hot, an 88v hot, and a ground. The 120v hot (terminal  7) and the 88v hot (terminal 9) are 180 degrees out of phase. You will measure 208v from terminals 7 to 9. The step-down transformer is not able to provide 2 120v hots that are 120 degrees out of phase as you would see with utility power.



 Note: If your installation requires both 208v and 120v output power you will need 2 separate subpanels: a 240v/120v panel and a dedicated 208v subpanel.

Description of NEMA L6-30 Receptacle

The NEMA L6-30 is used for input on the domestic APC Matrix-UPS, Smart-UPS T models, and Symmetra RM 2-6kva UPS.  The NEMA L6-30 receptacle is also used as an output receptacle for supplying 208 VAC in the Matrix-UPS, the Smart-UPS T models, and single phase Symmetra systems (Power Array, RM, LX).  It is a locking two-pole, three-wire grounding receptacle with a maximum input of 250V and 30A. When used with APC's UPS models, the receptacle will generally provide either 208V or 240V(depending on the UPS model). This receptacle requires that three connections be made (see diagram below).
