How to perform MSET on a BPH motor using Lexium 17/15 Servo Drive?

Issue:  Although the BPH motors that are used with the Lexium 17 and 15 range of Servo drives are factory MSET, occasionally there may be a need to MSET this in the field due to commutation error being reported.

        Product Line: Lexium BPH

Cause: Due to an incorrect offset value set in the drive, the drive may report a F25, commutation error.

Resolution: This resolution discusses the MSET procedure for a BPH motor with a Lexium 17/15 series drive.

Proper commutation and position feedback are required to interface a particular servo drive and motor combination. When using Schneider Electric BPH motors and Lexium drives, this setup (or “characterization”) process has been completed and verified for the user at the factory. Occasionally there may be a need to MSET the BPH motor and this is detailed in this procedure.
Perform the following steps, as described, and in the order presented, to complete the MSET procedure.
        1.    Disconnect the Motor from the Mechanical Load
        2.    Electrical Connections
        A.   Verify that the required electrical connections for drive power, logic power, motor power and resolver are as described in the Lexium drive user manual.
        B.   Apply 24VDC logic and AC input power to confirm proper drive startup sequence and self-checks.
Follow this MSET procedure only if the drive firmware is ver 5.51 and above.
Connect to the drive using Hyperterm…
        1. Type OPMODE followed by Enter – note down the Opmode (xx) the drive is set to.
        1. Type OPMODE 2 followed by Enter – switch to digital torque mode
             C.     Type 'EN' followed by Enter.

             D.     Type "Zero" followed by ENTER - Motor shaft will jump to nearest pole. MPHASE value is automatically set.
        1. Type SAVE
        1. Type OPMODE xx followed by enter ( where xx is the default value that was originally set for the application.)
             G.    Type COLDSTART (the drive will reboot)
        This completes the MSET procedure.

        How to read Status bits

Using a Modbus tool like Generic Modbus Tester you receive the values in the two examples below.  The Generic Modbus tester does not provide binary values so the examples below shows the conversion.  If the application used provides binary then keep that part.
Below is a couple of examples from a Galaxy VX:
        Example 1:  Register 400002 (16385)
        16385 in BIN 100 000 0000 0001
This example has 14 bits and to get to 16 bits two zeros were added to the left (red text)
        10 0000 0000 0001 is 0010 0000 0000 0001
Below is the mapping of the bits to the Modbus registers to the Galaxy VX.  You start the with zero on the right and end with 15 on the left.

        Example 2:  Register 400010 (512)
        512 in BIN 10 0000 0000
This example has 10 bits so six bits needs to be added to the left (red text)
        10 0000 0000 is 000 0010 0000 0000
Below is the mapping of the bits to the Modbus registers to the Galaxy VX.  You start the with zero on the right and end with 15 on the left.

With the release of Chrome 42 (released Apr 14/15) Silverlight is moving closer to becoming unsupported.  Chrome 42 disables by default the NPAPI API on which Silverlight runs in the browser, requiring users to re-enable the API if they wish to use Silverlight content in Chrome.  It's expected that support for NPAPI will be removed in a future version of Chrome altogether.
The update for Chrome 42 is an automatic process.  The patch is automatically download and applied with the next close/open of Chrome after April 15.
After the update, Silverlight will not function at all (by default).

*Warning: This article contains information about editing the registry. Improper changes to the registry can permanently damage the operating system. Always backup the registry before making any changes.*

The following registry key needs to be inserted or changed as follows:

        [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome\EnabledPlugins] "1"="java"

This can be accomplished in several ways.

        Method 1:

        1. In Chrome, enter the following in the navigation bar:   chrome://flags/#enable-npapi

        2. Look for the following entry:  Enable NPAPI Mac, Windows (Enables the use of NPAPI plugins. #enable-npapi)  (should be highlighted at the top)

        3. Click "Enable"

        4. A toolbar at the bottom of the page will ask to re-launch the browser.

        5. Once this re-launch occurs, all will work as before (but the user must re-install Silverlight)

        Method 2:

Using Command Prompt cmd.exe (as administrator) execute the following command:
        reg add HKLM\software\policies\google\chrome\EnabledPlugins /v 1 /t REG_SZ /d java

        Method 3:

        Using regedit.exe (as administrator)

Navigate the registry, creating the keys as necessary. Inside EnabledPlugins, create a new REG_SZ valeu with name 1 and value java.

*NOTE: Also by using typical enterprise policy tools an administrator could insert this registry key into all the machines on a domain.

ION over Modbus communications for PM8000 and ION7400 series meters

New features and improvements were made on firmware version v1.4.1 for the PM8000 and ION7400 meters. This attached document (TechnicalBulletin_ION-Modbus_v1.3) addresses issues related to replacing legacy products on a Modbus serial (RS-485) bus connected to PME systems.

ION over Modbus is a communications method that allows an ION master such as EcoStruxure™ Power Monitoring Expert or PowerLogic™ ION Setup software full access to all the ION modules inside the ION meter, while communicating using Modbus RTU protocol on the serial daisy chain.

The primary use of ION over Modbus is specifically for retrofit applications, where a Modbus meter such as the PowerLogic PM800 series meter is being replaced by an ION meter such as the PowerLogic PM8000 series meter on the RS-485 serial bus.

        Product Line

ION masters such as Power Monitoring Expert (PME) and ION Setup use ION protocol to communicate with an ION meter to access and manipulate the ION modules in the meter.  However, if the ION meter is added to a Modbus serial daisy chain, the ION meter must be configured as a Modbus device (i.e., protocol set to Modbus RTU) to allow Modbus masters access to the mapped Modbus registers in the ION meter.
PME and ION Setup use Modbus protocol to communicate with a Modbus gateway and the serial daisy-chained meters.  Historically, an ION meter that has been added as a Modbus RTU device in the Modbus serial daisy chain cannot be easily configured, i.e., PME or ION Setup cannot access the ION modules in the meter because the communications protocol is set to Modbus RTU, not ION.

All ION meters support the Modbus RTU protocol. Newer ION meter firmware adds ION over Modbus functionality. This enables an ION master such as Power Monitoring Expert or ION Setup to access all configuration and historical data in the meter while it is connected to a serial communications bus and configured as a Modbus RTU device

Updates are available for Power Monitoring Expert and ION Setup to support ION over Modbus for communication networks utilizing an Ethernet to serial gateway device to connect to the serial daisy chain.

Power Monitoring Expert and ION Setup currently do not support ION over Modbus communications for:
        • Direct Ethernet or direct serial communications connections.
        • Serial communications sites that use serial-to-serial communications converters such as an RS 232 to RS 485 converter or USB to RS 485 adapter.
        • Modem sites (telephone, radio or fiber optic).
        Serial communications considerations
ION meters can generate larger volumes of historical data, events or waveforms, which might cause communications performance issues.  It is recommended not to exceed 10-15 devices wired on the same RS-485 daisy chain.

To use ION over Modbus, both your ION meter and ION software must meet the minimum requirements:
        ION meter
        • PM8000 firmware v1.4.1 or later
        • ION7400 firmware v1.4.1 or later
        ION software
        • Power Monitoring Expert 8.2 CU1  (Cumulative Update #1) or later. This update is available for download from this Box link.
        • The latest version of ION Setup (available from Box at Schneider electric)

For more information on ION over Modbus Communication, review the attached Technical Bulletin.
