    Is there an embedded timestamp object within ION protocol handles?

    Further information with respect to how ION protocol handles timestamps is required.

    Cause
    Requires an understanding of how the hisotircal data's timestamps are generated within the meter's onboard data log.
     
    Resolution 

    ION protocol does not have the capability to output the value (of the ION handle) and time-stamp simultaneously similar to DNP where each point has a ".timestamp" subtype object that stores the timestamp of the associated event. However, the meter can output this information via ION protocol through another method that outputs values and their respective timestamps. This is achieved over 2 separate requests, one for the value and the other for the timestamps.

    For example, to read the value of a register from an ION meter, it uses (Method 21 - Register_read_value) · To read a register value from the meter, type:

    0x 21 void

    · Replace with a valid ION Handle in hexidecimal format In this example. 21 is the ION method number 21 which corresponds to ION_read_value and will return the value read from the specified ION register.

    · If you get a value response from the device you will see the following:

    For example, to read the timestamp of the last change made to the ION module containing the register from an ION meter, it uses (Method 20 - Register_read_time)

    · To read the timestamp of register from the meter, type:

    0x 20 void
    · Replace with a valid ION Handle in hexidecimal format.



    The timestamp output from the meter will be in UNIX format which is a system for describing instants in time, defined as the number of seconds that have elapsed since 00:00:00 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), Thursday, 1 January 1970, minus the number of leap seconds that have taken place since then. 

    **ION meters that do not have a Clock Module within the framework (E.g. ION 7300 series) will not support the above.
