What is the difference between a Shielded and a Non-shielded inductive proximity sensor ?

What is the difference between Shielded and Non-shielded inductive proximity sensors ?
Shielded devices have a sensing field with no lateral effect and are capable of being flush-mounted in metal (i.e. embeddable). Non-shielded sensors usually have a greater sensing range ( 25-100% greater ) but, require space around the sensing face to eliminate the effects of surrounding metal . Thus , they are non-embeddable in metal and have an electromagnetic field that flares out to the sides of the face . Telemecanique inductive sensors are available in metallic or plastic; barrel style (i.e. tubular) or block style bodies .
