An Example of Modifying IONServicesConfiguration.XML File in Order to Group the New Exposed Tags

    Issue
After exposing new tags that are not part of the default measurement template, the tags are not grouped and are added right under the device name.

For the purpose of this demonstration three digital input tags in an ION8600 meter are exposed to OPC.  This is what it looks like in an OPC Client when searching for the tags:

As shown in the above image, unlike the energy or demand tags that belong to their respective groups (Energy & Demand), the digital input tags do not belong to any group.

And this is what it looks like in IONServicesConfiguration.xml file:

The above screenshot indicates the default measurement template used for exposing OPC tags for an ION8600 meter is 'Full'.  An investigation of the 'Full' measurement template reveals that in fact there are no groups for IO points:

    Environment
    OPC

    Cause
Exposing new tags that are not configured in one of the default templates.

    Resolution

There are two locations the new group can be added:
    • Directly in the 'Full' measurement template.  This will affect all the meters that are assigned 'Full' measurement template such as ION8xxx, ION76xx.
    • Parallel to the 'Full' measurement template.  This will affect only the device which its tags (digital inputs in this scenario) were exposed.
Here we will demonstrate how to create a new group in parallel to 'Full' measurement template and move the tags under the group.

    1.  Locate the IONServicesConfiguration.xml file in PME installation directory under ...\Config\IONServices\ folder.

IMPORTANT: Make a backup copy of the file to revert back in case the file gets corrupted.

    2.  Edit IONServicesConfiguration.xml in Notepad; modify the section as shown below:

Note that a group named ‘IO’ is created.  This group consists of two groups: ‘Digital’ and ‘Analog’.  The digital inputs tags are then moved under the ‘Digital’ section.
There are no tags under ‘Analog’ section.

    3.  Save and close the XML file.

Now this is how the OPC Client will see the tags:

    And the values:
