How to configure the Network Management Card and PowerChute Business Edition to be discovered and managed by Solarwinds Orion Network Performance Management (NPM)

    Issue:
How to configure the Network Management Card and PowerChute Business Edition to be discovered and managed by Solarwinds Orion Network Performance Management (NPM)

    Product Line:
    PowerChute Business Edition
    Network Management Card

    Environment:
Solarwinds Orion Network Performance Management (NPM)

    Cause:
    Informational

Solution: Orion NPM is a network monitoring application. It delivers real-time views that enable you to visually track network performance. It ships with the APC PowerNet MIB preloaded. Some configuration is required on the APC Network Management Card (NMC) and PCBE to allow them to be managed through SNMP with OrionNPM.

    Network Management Card:

SMNPv1 Access is enabled by default - found in Administration-Network-SNMPv1-access. This allows the NMC to be discovered out of the box by NPM. To allow traps/alarms to be received by NPM go to the NMC - Administration - Notification - SNMP Traps - Trap Receivers - Add Trap Receiver and add the IP address of the machine running NPM.

    PowerChute Business Edition (PCBE):

PowerChute Business Edition version 9.5 offers SNMP v1 and SNMP v3 See the User's Guide at this link http://www.apc.com/us/en/prod_docs/results.cfm?DocType=User%20Manual&Query_Type=3&Value=125

NOTE:  PCBE version 9.2.1 and below only supports SNMP on Windows OS. The SNMP service (provided by Microsoft, see FA159596) must be installed on the machine running PCBE. In the PCBE Console right click the machine with the snmp service installed and go to Properties - Communications - SNMP Communications and tick the Enable SNMP Communications box (The 'Show Advanced Items' tickbox on the bottom of the window must be checked).
