Insulated pins/plugs – Clipsal’s plug for safety

Insulated Pins

Clipsal’s reputation for providing safe and quality products continues, as they strive to remain one step ahead of their competitors when it comes to producing the safest products on the market.

They have endorsed a new safety measure by changing the way they manufacture their plugs, following a change in the electrical standards for Australia and New Zealand. The new standard requires all active and neutral pins on low voltage plugs to be of the insulated pin type.

The new clause states that all live pins on low voltage plugs except for 20A 250V - 3 flat pin plugs, 10A 125V 2 parallel flat pin plugs and 10A 125V 2 round pin and 1 flat (earth) pin plugs shall be of the insulated pin type from April 3, 2005. The safety requirement applies to all low voltage plugs, and all appliances/products that require low voltage plugs, eg. including exhaust fans, extension leads, toasters and hair dryers.

Clipsal - Demand the brand

By anticipating this move early, Clipsal began integrating the insulated pins into the product lines in 1998, after developing the application of a layer of insulation directly to the electrical pins, without adding to the overall width.

This new method not only complies with the new electrical standards for Australia and New Zealand but also provides a layer of protection between the user and the active circuit.

Research indicates that the insulated protection, which is applied to the pins, significantly reduces the risk of electrocution and greatly enhances the safety in the workplace or home. Previously electrocution could occur from contact with a live electrical pin exposed from an incorrectly or partially inserted electrical plug. This occurs when the pins come into contact with a thin conductive material like that of a metal knife or Venetian blind.

Clipsal’s “Plug for Safety” campaign is easily recognisable following the creation of two new packaging symbols. A circular version of the Safety plug symbol will appear on most packaging, whereas the rectangular version will appear on smaller header cards and packaging.

A vast amount of Clipsal’s product range, including exhaust fans, C-Bus, HomeMinder, HomeSafe Security, Medilec, cord sets, general plugs and industrial plugs, have been upgraded to comply with the new legislation. It’s a brand new look for Clipsal and further reiterates the effort and commitment they inject into producing quality, safe products.

Should a consumer wish to upgrade their current appliance or extension lead to comply with this standard, Clipsal has the ability to provide rewireable plugs for the addition of plugs to these leads/appliances even though it is not compulsory to upgrade the appliance/lead if it was purchased by a consumer prior to the standard being enforced).
